Political scandals are nothing new, but somehow they’ve become both more shocking and more rote in the age of technology. As a society we continue to find politicians' missteps and disgrace intriguing, but should their scandals be treated as news, or just a guilty pleasure?

Become a more discerning consumer and go beyond mindless scrolling. You’ll learn to recognize the cultural context and marketing spin that determines what hits your feed.

The instructor:
Stef Woods is a full-time faculty member with the American Studies Program at American University. Her teaching, speaking and research interests include social media, American popular culture, sexuality, nonprofits, and activism. Woods has been featured in numerous media outlets and publications, including NPR, Associated Press, Forbes.com, and The Washington Post. Prior to teaching, she practiced immigration law with a focus on deportation and Violence Against Women Act cases. Woods received her BA from Wellesley College, her MALS from Georgetown University, and her JD from American University.
