Proceeds from this sale support UC Books to Prisoners. A working group of the non-profit Independent Media Center, Books to Prisoners provides free books to incarcerated people throughout Illinois and promotes community awareness and education about incarceration. As a volunteer run organization, volunteers collect and sort tens of thousands of donated books from the local community each year. They read hundreds of letters from incarcerated people each month, asking for books. Since beginning in 2004, we've sent over 164,000 books to nearly 23,000 incarcerated people. Books to Prisoners also stocks and staffs lending libraries at both Champaign county jails. We only sell the surplus books we have no room to store.
