Is California really such a glamourous place to live in?

Објавено во Калифорнија форум

Everyone knows all those movies and TV shows showing the glamourous life in California. Is it really so? Or is it just a shallow mask? What is the real California for you?

I was born and raised in Escondido (northeast of San Diego), went to university in San Luis Obispo (north of Santa Barbara), and worked in Los Angeles. I can tell you through these experiences that while yes, occasionally you do get depressed because of the shit-eating grins that people have on their faces all of the time (even when they're sad), the West Coast is NOT a depressing place to live.. quite the opposite. Too much of anything is depressing and if you face everything with cynicism and only focus on the negative portions, of course, everything will seem terrible to you.. "The west coast is a very depressing place to live"? That is such an incredibly biased sentiment.

California is diverse, well-situated between natural forests such as the redwoods in the San Francisco bay area, the snowy mountains of Big Bear, the gorgeous beaches of Carlsbad and borders "festively colorful" Mexico to the south and "hippie green" Oregon. Yes, I do agree that superficiality reigns in certain cities and neighborhoods but that's the same in any state/country/province. What about SoHo in New York, Salamanca in Spain, and Paris in France? Pretentious folks are all over the world. When I first moved to LA, I hated it and held the same pessimistic attitude that some of you probably have currently about the city. But after living there and experiencing the different levels of craziness and sanity, you finally find a great group of people who stay with you because you've actually made the time and effort to develop the friendship and commit to it.

So, basically.. to end my little rant, my point is this: Don't take a superficial look at California before you actually make a conscious effort to enjoy what we have to offer. Otherwise, you're just being as pretentious as all those blonde bimbos you're disgusted by.

yes living in California is good. Living in California has its advantages. I know this will come as a surprise to my family and friends whose first response when they heard I was moving here. there was other advantages residing in california is that anyone can marry anyone as long as you don’t care whether it’s a legal marriage.

I go to UC santa barbara and live in a neighborhood populated by rich white people that spend all their free time drinking surfing or doing coke. It is pretty miserable for most of the people that live here because it is extremely difficult to make meaningful connections with anyone, especially people of the opposite gender as friends. In general men and women do not talk to one another unless they are interested in each other sexually or one needs something from another. (I guess that is redundant.) Essentially if you want to know what californians act like, just try to imagine a society of people that all watch too much tv, especially reality shows, and take it to be a slightly exaggerated but ultimately realistic portrayal of their lives. Los Angeles is the heart of this problem, mostly because of hollywood. I have to say that I do know some very smart people that love it here, but they never asked themselves if California was going to be glamorous or not--they make their own fun and have since high school, and never had hopes that they could move somewhere to better their lives.

The west coast is a very depressing place to live; san francisco is the exception but it is so incredibly expensive it is not worth it, even if you can afford it. The east coast is a much more socially healthy place to live, although you should stay away from new york, as well. Beth is right in that many people in california are affordable but none of them are cities you have ever heard of.

Living in California has its advantages. There is no doubt that most of the cities in California offer affordable accommodation.

    Hi Gaelle,

Living in California is not as full of all the glam that TV shows make it out to be. I lived in southern California for a while, so my opinion is a bit biased towards the Los Angeles area, especially. For me, the real California is full of smog, tons of traffic, and a lot of self-absorbed people (although to be fair, not everyone is like that because everyone is different - this is just a general trend I've noticed).

A lot of the characters in TV shows are fake to one another. If there is one thing that is true about those TV shows, it's shows how insincere some Californians are to one another.

If you're into glamor, you can take a trip to Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Huntington Beach. Everything there is indeed really nice, but it's hollow because it lacks a sense of community. Everyone huddles in their homes and doesn't even know their neighbors. Those houses are "real," all right, but it's not the kind of real that I would like to have.
