Sarah Davachi – Artist Talk – Psychoacoustics, Timbre, and Minimalism
This talk will give an overview of her practice as a composer-performer, focusing specifically on work from the past few years which explores timbre and sonic intimacy through the use of psychoacoustic effects, alternate tunings, and minimalist structures. She'll be presenting several older and newer works, discussing the various processes she explores when working with both acoustic and electronic sources and how they vary between recorded versus live performance formats. There will be time at the end of the artist talk for a Q and A period.
Sarah Davachi bio
As a composer and performer of electroacoustic music, Sarah Davachi's (b. 1987, Calgary, Canada) work is concerned with the close intricacies of intimate aural space, utilizing extended durations and simple harmonic structures that emphasize subtle variations in texture, overtone complexity, psychoacoustic phenomena, and temperament and intonation. The instrumentation she employs is varied, including electric organ, pipe and reed organ, piano, tape-replay samplers, analog synthesizers, voice, early Western strings and keyboards, and orchestral strings, brass, and woodwinds, with mutual idioms often layered in tonal counterpoint.
