COst of living in Milan

Geplaatst in Milaan forum

Hi Milan group... ..I am planning to move to Milan towards the end of May and I am trying to find out about the cost of living. I suppose I need an idea of how much a month one needs to make to get by comfortably..not luxuriously.. but comfortably..I am a EU citizen so I don;t really knowthe variations of taxes you would have to pay.

If anyone could help me.. I would be so grateful!

Thanks

Sarah

    Sarah!

Taxes are quite on the high end.the housing sounds good and its normally cheaper further away from the centre so I guess thats a sacrifice you have to make.

Its 1,400 euros or $. I think if managed well it should see you through.Cooking is the real deal saves a lot.

Its quite bureaucratic here so be prepared for lots of paperwork and queuing here and there for a long time in the first few weeks. But it helps you from the EU so I guess you wont need a lot of paperwork.

Otherwise its an interesting city to live in.

Thanks so much Douglas,, that is a great help! Wow..30% tax..they werent joking when they said Italian taxes were high..my salary will be about 1400 and she quoted the tax taken off as being between 8.25 - 22% ?
My flat should be about 350 Euros for my half and that includes utilites....but apparently it is about an hour commute from work although only 15 kilometres..

I guess I will be cooking at home, practicing my Italian dishes and drinking that wonderful Italian wine :)

To live comfortably in Milan at least you need to make around 1300 euros according to me.Average salaries here according to my understanding are within this 1000Eur range or lower

In my experience I would categorize expenses as follows

Housing which will be the highest:-

    Shared room:-280-350 Eur minus utilities
Single room :-480-520 Eur minus utilities
    Mono locale :-At least 700Eur

    Transport:-
Monthly Ticket with access to Bus,Trams,Metro
    Centre :-30 Eur
    Outer Zone:-45 Eur

    Utilities:-

    Electricity:- 20-30Eur a month
    Internet :- 20-30Eur a month

    Car:-
    Fuel:-100Eur
    Car Insurance:-60-80Eur
And many other initial set up costs

    Food:-
Around 120-180 if you cook at home and definitely more if you frequently eat out.

    Entertainment:-
Varies with what type but 100should see you through them month if you the Apertivo type and do 2-3 dinners a month.

A typical evening out in Milan to han gout with friends for an apertivo will cost you around 10-15 Eur.

    A dinner will cost 15-25Eur

    Others
    Hospitals
Public-Long waiting time i.e 2weeks for test or procedure cost 30-40 Eur
Family doctor:-Free visits/as many as you wish but most if not all dont speak English you have to know Italian.

    Private:-
Dentists:- Average consulting fee:-80 Euros per visit for those who might speak English.Other Italian around 50 Eur
    Doctors :-Average 80 Eur

Taxes I think is around 30% am not sure.

    Otherwise hope this helps.
