To live in Portugal

Geplaatst in Centro forum

From your profile I deduct that you are an American. I have no idea what part of Portugal your experience is from, but you cant be farther from the truth in my experience. I am surprised that you pick out just one dish and base their complete cuisine on that. Further more why should they speak English in a Portuguese school. Want to compare that to Spain where absolutely no one speaks English. There are a number of god International schools throughout the country. I feel sorry for your bad experience here. I can safely say that compared to Spanish, Portuguese are way nicer. If not more humble. Want to compare their kitchen. The PT one is more superior, if it was only that its not drenched in oil. Again sad that you base this all on a seemingly failed marriage.

I am a white American married to a black American women of mixed ancestry including Cape Verdean. When we planned a vacation to Portugal she asked me how are the Portugese about race issues? I had no answer at the time.

Now that we're back home, I have to say that the Portuguese people both in Lisbon and the Algarve were always polite and gracious, happy that I had learned enough of the language to ask for basic things. We never got any "looks" like we might get in America, the race issue never came up. Lisbon has a large percentage of people of color, whether mixed race or African. Once I would "break the ice" with my school book Portuguese, the people we met would then look to my wife to speak Portugese, just assuming from her appearance that she was from there. This is a positive sign to me that people of color are assumed to be Portuguese which speaks volumes to me about a culture of inclusion and race consciousness. To the African American guy about to move there I would say that it is probably better than in the U.S. providing you are polite and make an effort to speak the language. I would move there if I could.

It is sad to hear from you such a bad statements maybe due to a negative personal experience. I think it is slanted because of a personal temporary shipwreck, isn´t it?
And from another point of view, portuguese people adore english culture and , generally, they can speak a really good english. So maybe your point of view is slanted by the disappointment. Portuguese people is really marvellous, maybe it is not so easy to get in touch with so quickly but they are really warmhearted and generous. From the other point, stupid people has no flag. Sometimes we have to let the time heals our wounds. If your children have portuguese blood I would consider it a big gift...if you raise them in a multicultural environment it will be really better for them, because the whole world will be their playground.

Do u in the US by any chance have portuguese language in your schools??? I DONT THINK SO!!!!! So i do we portuguese have to have your language in our country??? Are u crazy? And another thing, obviously u are a very ignorant person if the only thing about portuguese cuisin is just potatos and omelette, the portuguese cuisin is one of the best and with most variety in the world. So go back to your country bcause u are not welcome here. As for the foreigners, i have worked with some and all of them have good opinions about the portuguese people, offcourse u will find bad people everywhere in the wourld that is obvious but u have no wright to put down all Portuguese people!!!!

Portuguese racist???? Do you have any knowledge of history? The Portuguese were the culture that taught the world how to navigate the oceans. Their country has been invaded and held by others many times from the Romans to the Moors and French over the past millennium. Often with invaders sharing the country. This is one of the most welcoming cultures in Europe.

I moved from Texas 3 years ago and it has lived up to all my expectations. This is where I'll retire and live out my life. Traveling/studying extensively but not nearly enough time to devour all the history and art.

Here's some advice as you seem to make the same mistake of most Americans when traveling/moving abroad.

Rule #1 You move to a non English speaking country? Don't EXPECT them to speak English primarily. Think how stupid it would look for a Portuguese to move to America and EXPECT everyone to speak Portuguese.

Rule #2 Not sure what rock you live under but there is much more to Portuguese food than potatoes, eggs and omelettes. But maybe if you would learn to read a menu you'd have more choices to order from than batatas and ovos.

Rule #3 Trashing the food, people and culture you are trying to live in doesn't usually help you make friends.

Rule #4 Raising your children to hate whether it be others or a country never brings about productive, happy, well adjusted young adults.

Word of Advice You love the Spanish? Not much more than a few hours by car or train from anywhere in Portugal. Bye. Or, the same plane that brought you from the US goes back that way most everyday.

One of the reasons I moved here was to get away from narrow minded people such as yourself. You weren't born here, don't like it here, have nothing positive to add here so simply go away and be just as miserable somewhere else.

A final resounding point - which, if brings critical remarks, merely shows the numb-headedness of the critic: the Portuguese are exceptionally friendly and extremely hospitable to all who visit. Your claim to be American is about as authentic as an apple and custard hamburger composing a George Gershwin rhapsody!

I have replied to this post already. However, I'll reply again. Your topic was , and still is, presumably: 'To live in Portugal is a huge mistake'. Yet, your commentary concerns itself little with living in Portugal, it , merely, attacks the Portuguese with sentences inspired by a reading age of four and an I.Q which has obviously been taken from a box of cornflakes! '...a school that don't know how to speak English' - obviously written by someone who 'don't know' how to write it! Sorry, no disrespect intended but, you say the Portuguese are the most boring people yet, your commentary has just put my glass eye to sleep! Given the choice of reading your hackneyed nonsense and watching paint dry- I'll go with the paint!

And, let's be honest, you claim that your children (And I doubt whether you have any real ones- putting pipe-cleaners for arms and cotton-wool for hair on a clothes peg do not make a child!) have Portuguese blood....the only way that could happen is if you ransacked a Portuguese graveyard and drew blood from a freshly-buried corpse with your crack needle!

Yours is the worst type of racist chant ever!
