Foreigner in Zurich

Publisert i Zürich forum

For everybody moving to Zurich, I just happened to stumble across and article that you might find very interesting (although from 2006):

The number of foreign residents in Zurich has risen from around a fifth to almost a third of the population in the past 30 years, according to new statistics.

Germans have overtaken Italians as the biggest foreign community in Switzerland's largest city and financial centre, with the demand for highly skilled workers increasing in recent years.

Figures compiled by Zurich city authorities reveal that 110,892 foreign people of 165 nationalities were living in the city last year, up around ten per cent in the past decade.

I wonder how many of those will show up on the community eventually ;o)

It is true that new laws have made it harder for a non-European to get hired in Switzerland, and yes, the employer must say why no Swiss person is suitable for the job. However, although it helps alot, I disagree that you NEED to know German/Swiss-German to get a job in Zurich. If you have good qualifications, many bigger companies will hire you if you speak English. I know a number of people living and working here for many years with no knowledge of German. Your best bet would be to get a company to give you a work visa before coming here.

Without any knowledge of German, it will be really hard to find a job in Zurich. Additionally you can only get a work permit if a company proves that they can't find a Swiss person to do the job. So don't get your hopes up to high...

    Good luck!
