Help needed on German Taxation System for forgeiners

Dodane na Niemcy forum

Dear All,
I am non-European citizen and come to Germany on a long term deputation project. I reached here on 20 June 2016. I understand the tax year ends in 31 December 2016 and the government allows 6 months of tax free stay to foreigners in a year.
Will I be able stay for continuously 1 year without tax burden, if I take 15 days of vacation in the year 2016?

The following are the dates as per my calculation. Is this a possible scenario ?
June 20 - 31 December 2016 = 194 days (-15 days of vacation = 179 days).
1 Jan 2017 - 30 June 2017 = 180 days.

If yes, during my vacation in 2016 can I stay in Germany/Europe Union or do I need to go back to my home country to avoid the tax burden ?

Thanks for your help in advance!

Askaben: The information you received is wrong - you are liable for income tax on every Euro you earn (worldwide) while you reside in Germany.
German tax law is very complicated (especially when it comes to foreigners) and declaring things wrongly is a criminal offense. Therefore you should get a good tax adviser to prepare things for you - as a non-German-speaker it is basically impossible to do this right!

Hallo! Ich denke, dass die Anwesenheit von Urlaub ist nicht der Grund für den Aufschub der Steuerperiode. Sie müssen Experten in Ihrem Thema Beratung bekommen. Ich denke, dass haben Sie alle!

    Hello Askaben,

I think, it depends on where you are registered.
If you're registered in your German city more than 180 days you have to pay your taxes in Germany. If you're registered less days you must pay in your country.
Regarding the VAT, it depends a little more on the activity you're doing.
The best would be to look for a tax advisor there. These people are called "Steuerberater".

    Best regards,
    Tom
