Capilano University instructor, Phillip Djwa will discuss the advantages and limitations of artificial intelligence and its application to legal issues people face every day.

Everyone is talking about artificial intelligence (AI), but few understand how it can be used to improve our everyday access to justice as citizens. In a fun and informative talk, Phillip Djwa will examine the advantages—and limitations—of AI and its application to legal issues people face every day. How far can technology go to help us? Using a chatbot built as a case study, Djwa looks at the state of the industry, issues of built-in bias of computer systems, algorithmic accountability and the general fear we have of being taken over by AI machines like SkyNet. Djwa will be joined by Drew Jackson, head of the People’s Law School’s chatbot project.

Djwa is passionate about the opportunities for technology to impact social change and the arts. He is a creative technologist and digital strategist with more than 25 years of experience in the arts, design, digital media and film/TV. He teaches interaction design at Capilano University and other post-secondary institutions. He is an accomplished facilitator, thinker and successful entrepreneur.

Part of the Capilano Universe lecture series, this presentation is free. Registration is not required, but seating is limited.
