Madama Butterfly in Concert

The young geisha Cio-Cio-San gives up everything for her handsome husband, Lt. B.F. Pinkerton of the U.S. Navy --- her family, her heritage, herself. When he abandons her, she waits faithfully for three long years, never losing hope. But when Pinkerton returns with his American wife and demands the child he left her with, Madame Butterfly is forced to make a terrible choice. She can live without honor, or die with it. Filled with popular melodies like "Un bel di" and the Flower Duet, Puccini never wrote a more heartbreaking or gorgeous score.

Mai Frances Doles was one of Shreveport's greatest opera lovers and supporters, and a well-known "grand dame" about town. The Mai Frances Doles Memorial Opera in Concert is Spotlight on Opera's annual grand finale and fundraiser. In the concert's inaugural year under Mai Frances' name, we honor her memory with a performance of her favorite opera, Madama Butterfly by Puccini, starring her very own goddaughter, Elizabeth Herlitz Cortés in the title role. Elizabeth is a Spotlight alumna as well as a faculty and board member. You better believe Mai Frances was front and center when Elizabeth sang the title role in our 2019 Aida concert! We invite friends and admirers of Mai Frances, as well as opera lovers everywhere, to support the young artists of Spotlight on Opera by attending this beautiful concert.
