Moving to Manchester

Hi. Me and my friend are planning to move from Norway to the UK in September/October. Right now we are considering Manchester as our new home town. Does anybody have any recommendations on nice areas to live in Manchester, that is also not too expensive and also safe? Any other suggestions on other city's or areas in the UK is also gratefully accepted!
