Humor Us and In Time and Paradise

"Humor Us" is a group exhibition of artists working on the many locations of humor — the comic object, the politically biting, the silly, the prop, where the the overlooked meets the hilarious, the pun, and all the wonderfully important locations of humor in art making. The world needs humor now: humor is a salve, a politic, a laugh, a poetic, and an important location for making art.

Mark Twain wrote, "Humor is the good-natured side of a truth." While much of our current public sphere is acutely arduous, humor is an important location that creates an alternative lens within which to view and critique both our culture and ourselves. Humor is an essential component of humanity, and humanity is exactly what is needed and necessary, especially now.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment. While a milestone in the United States’ story of suffrage and equal rights for women, in practice, the historic document granted voting rights only to those well-off and white.

In time and paradise is a site-specific installation celebrating nineteen Illinoisan women who fought for the rights of all women. Disillusioned with early 20th century white suffragettes who claimed others would have rights "in time," they formed some of the first women’s organizations and feminist newspapers, created and sold photographs, and marched for ALL women’s rights.
