As part of a doctoral study into intercultural learning for expatriates to South Africa, hosted at the University of Warwick, United Kingdom, I am looking for people who are willing to share their experience of relocating to South Africa. If you are moving to South Africa in 2020, or have come to live in South Africa since late 2019/early 2020 and have received preparatory training as part of your relocation, you are warmly invited to take part! The research focuses on the intercultural learning experiences of expatriates to South Africa. By developing in-depth stories of peoples lived experiences, the study aims to see what role such learning plays in one’s relocation journey.

You can find an information sheet that gives further details about the study and participation here: In summary, involvement would look like two short one-to-one interviews which will be spread across three months and conducted online or via phone. A short cultural learning journal will also be part of the study. This creates a great personal record of what, and how, you learnt about South African culture during the first months of your stay.

About the researcher:
Johannes de Kam is a doctoral researcher and teaching fellow at the University of Warwick. His project focuses on the role of intercultural training on the relocation experience of expatriates to South Africa. His educational specialism is in promoting reflective practice and leads a module aimed at developing inquiry skills. His research and teaching skills, mixed with over six years’ experience supporting academic global mobility projects has led him to specialise further in intercultural learning.
