Native Seeds/SEARCH (NS/S) is kicking off their 22nd annual Adopt-A-Crop campaign. This campaign seeks to raise awareness and support for growing and saving seed varieties that are in low supply in the NS/S Seed Bank. Many of the seeds in the NS/S collection are arid-adapted, heirloom varieties that thrive in the desert climate of the Southwest.

NS/S works with Native Communities and partner farmers, not only to conserve seed for future generations, but to honor and respect the cultural heritage represented by these seeds. The successful grow-out of this year’s Adopt-A-Crop varieties helps to ensure the seeds, and in turn food, are available to gardeners, small-scale farmers, and Native American growers preserving traditional farming methods.

Since its founding, Native Seeds/SEARCH has been dedicated to conserving and promoting the arid-adapted crop diversity of the Southwest in support of sustainable farming and food security. Preserved in their seed bank today are nearly 2,000 varieties of corn, beans, squash, chiles, herbs, as well as traditional fiber and dye plants - all adapted to the unique challenges of landscapes extending from southern Colorado to central Mexico.

The Native Seeds/SEARCH seed collection is an American cultural treasure, representing the cultural heritage and farming knowledge of over 50 Indigenous communities, as well as recent immigrants like Spanish missionaries and Mormon homesteaders. NS/S also conserves a number of important crop wild relatives, wild ancestors of domesticated plants. Notably one of this year’s selected Adopt-A-Crop varieties is teosinte, one of the wild parent plants from which all modern corn has developed and of great interest to modern researchers.

Native Seeds/SEARCH has an online presence and carries a wide range of seeds, unique food products from regional vendors, and Native American arts and crafts. For more information, visit: nativeseeds.org
