Relatively Singing: Music of the "Other" Mendelssohn, Mozart and More

When a music manuscript of a piano sonata, signed by "F. Mendelssohn," was found in a Paris bookstore in 1970, it was assumed to be by Felix Mendelssohn and hailed as a great discovery. Decades later, Music Historian Angela Mace proved that it was actually the work of his older sister, Fanny -- one of more than 500 compositions she created in her lifetime.

Join The Reston Chorale and Dr. Mace on Sunday, October 22 at 4 pm, to hear how Fanny Mendelssohn finally got her much-deserved recognition, as the chorale presents Relatively Singing. The concert will take place in the beautiful acoustics of Saint Luke Catholic Church, 7001 Georgetown Pike, McLean, Virginia. Ample free parking is available.

Relatively Singing will feature music by six composers who -- while excellent composers in their own rights -- were somewhat overshadowed by famous family members. For Leopold Mozart, this was by choice, as he set aside his own successful career as a composer to nurture and advance the talents of his young son, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In others, such as Fanny Mendelssohn and Clara Schumann, societal norms limited the exposure of their talents.

Besides choral works of Fanny Mendelssohn and Leopold Mozart, Relatively Singing will include vocal music by C.P.E. Bach, Michael Haydn, Alessandro Scarlatti and Clara Wieck Schumann. It will also feature Fanny Mendelssohn's "Wedding March (Prelude in F)," performed by David B. Lang on a magnificent Steiner-Reck pipe organ,
