1968 Egypt, Texas.
"A Coffin in Egypt" by American master Horton Foote is a haunting drama of the mythic life of a
Texan royal. Born of privilege in 1880, Myrtle Bledsoe, 'The Queen' of Egypt, Texas looks back on a life of strife; immersed in the class, race, and women's issues of the 20th century. In a final quest to recalibrate the weight of her heart Myrtle lays bare family secrets of sexual betrayal and murder.
Myrtle's reckoning is ingeniously portrayed by Obie-winning actress Maude Mitchell accompanied by a live trio led by musical director and composer Carver Blanchard. An auditory painting frames the play with brushstrokes of humor, horror, and surrealism staged by legendary director Lee Breuer a few months prior to his recent passing.
"A Coffin in Egypt" pays homage to Foote's muse, brilliant short story writer Katherine Anne Porter.
