The Korean Cultural Center Washington, D.C. (KCCDC) proudly presents the first performance of the OnStage Korea at Home 2021 Season, featuring the U.S. premiere of the dance short film Annyeong, Hello! by Lee K-Dance on Thursday, April 29 at 6:00 p.m.

From one of Korea’s top contemporary dance companies and Artistic Director Lee Kyung-eun, Annyeong, Hello! explores the complex emotions of a diaspora formed when people are forced to leave their homes-and parts of themselves-behind. It weaves together Korean history and culture, from the dark days of the 1950-53 Korean War to the modern legacy of the demilitarized zone (DMZ), enduring national symbols, and foundational traditional culture. The Korean domestic experience provides a useful reference to ponder traumatic migrations more universally, including refugees, displaced and wandering communities, personal anxiety and loss of identity, and the long-term consequences of war and division.

Ultimately, Annyeong, Hello! is about the process of living day to day and the need to keep going. The title thus incorporates the casual Korean greeting annyeong, a simple term imbued with emotions of joy, longing, and regret that derive from its various meanings: “Hello!” “How are you?” and “See you again soon.”

This new dance short film, produced in an immersive, experimental, and cinematic style, is a condensed version of the company’s original 2019 one-hour stage performance of the same name.

This OnStage Korea at Home video releases Thursday, April 29 at 6:00 p.m. via the KCCDC YouTube channel (@Koreaculturedc) and on Facebook (@Koreaculturedc). For complete information, visit the KCCDC website at www.koreaculturedc.org
