Celebrating Black History month, Pan American Symphony Orchestra pays tribute to American jazz composers with a performance of two works by Duke Ellington: the third movement of Three Black Kings which he dedicated to Dr. Martin Luther King, and The Nutcracker Suite, Ellington's reimagining of the Tchaikovsky Christmas classic. The second half of the show presents a parade of popular American jazz standards complimented by the smooth baritone of acclaimed jazz singer, Caesar, whose style is often likened to that of Nat King Cole. And as is typical of Maestro Buslje's programming, Pan American Symphony Orchestra concerts often feature a surprise work that doesn't seem to fit the program - until you hear it! For this show, it is the work of Austrian composer, Frederick Gulda, --the Concerto for Cello, a jazzy take on Austrian folk dances.
