Artists’ use of a monochrome or single-color palette dates to the pre-Renaissance period, when an oil painting technique called grisaille (literally, “grayness”) dominated the Northern European art world. Today, and despite the color-saturated intensity of our Technicolor existence, artists have continued this legacy, choosing to explore their reality in a manner that extracts its essences, sets up new abstract paradigms for contemplation, and, at times, detaches from it completely. This exhibition explores those practices, and the psychological and conceptual impact of a monochrome palette, through a selection of contemporary figurative artists’ works which engage with its unique properties and push the boundaries of traditional monochromatic media. Curated by Lyme Academy Co-Artistic Directors Amaya Gurpide and Jordan Sokol, Monochrome will be displayed in the Academy’s Chauncey-Stillman Gallery between November 12, 2022 and February 19, 2023.
