Part memoir and part history lesson, the newly released book 'The Lotus Skyliners – A Big Band Lifts Up a Small Community' tells the story of Japanese American high school students who found their footing with the help of an inspiring music teacher. Just a few years removed from World War II concentration camps, these youths formed a successful big band that subsequently toured up and down the West Coast and got everybody dancing to the tunes of Glenn Miller, Woody Herman, and Duke Ellington.

Seven decades later, a group of original band members and their faithful followers will come together to reminisce about what that iconic band meant to their lives. The ensuing discussion will certainly evoke fond memories of the post-war Japanese American community in Seattle during the 1950s and 1960s.
The event will be held: Saturday, November 4, 2023
2:00 pm – 4:00 pm,
Nisei Veterans Committee Memorial Hall
1212 South King Street Seattle, WA 98144

Admission is free. The Kaiden Uyeda Quartet will play live music and light refreshments will be on hand. Signed books will be available for a $20.00 donation to benefit the Nisei Veterans Committee Foundation’s Scholarship Fund.
