Newport Classical presents Cliburn-Bound Piano Marathon - A Benefit for Ukraine

Celebrate classical piano repertoire in this weekend-long marathon featuring nine exceptional amateur pianists, of which four are on their way to the Eighth Cliburn International Amateur Piano Competition in October 2022. The competition is hailed by the Boston Globe as "a celebration of music, and the people who have to make music no matter what." The word amateur comes from the Latin word "amare," which means doing something purely for the love of it and this Newport Classical special event highlights the importance of music making in everyday life. Whether you attend one, or all four performances, you will be treated to a wide array of exceptional pianists, who are also outstanding in their chosen fields.

At the 7:30pm concert on April 30, Grammy Award-nominated violinist Misha Keylin, originally from St. Petersburg, Russia, and Newport Classical Board President Suzanna Laramee, will perform duos together, including a work by Ukrainian composer Myroslav Skoryk. Baritone and Newport Classical Director of Artistic Planning and Engagement Trevor Neal will sing the Ukrainian national anthem.

Misha Keylin says: "I was fortunate to immigrate, as a young child, from St. Petersburg, Russia to the United States. My wife, Yuliya Keylin, is originally from Kyiv, Ukraine. We are now proud US citizens, but our family roots will always have connections to both Russia and Ukraine. We are in utter shock, disbelief and constant grief regarding the continued bloody aggression against millions of innocent people of Ukraine. Music is what brought my wife and I together. We hope and pray that this unnecessary devastation stops immediately. I wish to honor the victims of this horrible suffering, and dedicating this performance to them is the least I can do."
