We hope to be moving to Ponta Delgada in the fall, in making our preparations Im wondering if anyone has recommendations for an International bank that is here in the US and there.

I would recomment BPI. We tried to open an account with a couple of the other banks and encountered unnecessary bureaucracy. Having a branch of the same bank in your home country is irrelevant, I have found when I lived in France. Using a service like Transferwise is very easy. You can hold account with multi-currencies with it and it makes transfers between your bank in the States and your bank in Sao Miguel really easy.
