A Scotsman in Poznan

Geplaatst in Poznań forum

Hi, I have recently moved to Poznan and am wondering if there are any groups of English speakers that meet up for drinks etc. I don't know many people here other than my girlfriends friends and I miss going out for a pint.

Is see where you coming from but I wouldn't worry about fish freshnes as a lot of them (if not most) come frozen.
And also, I'm sure there is couple of F&Ch shops for example in Birmingham, in the middle of UK with the similar distance of about 130 miles to the coast. And I strongly believe they cope with the distance problem some how ;-)

I would love to start my own business here in the future, but I first want to have a greater command of the language before i consider it. I really think some of these idea's of bringing British style foods here would be a great success. I know from friends who own restaurants and such like in the UK always have a lot of Polish custom regardless of the cuisine. The only obstacle of a fish in chip shop in Poznan the fish might not be so fresh with the distance to the coast. Although I'm sure their are plenty of suppliers at the same time.

Depends on how reasonable this compensation was, you could think about setting your own bussines.

To be honest, as more and more people from the UK visit Poland for long/short term I thought to set up "Fish&Chips" bussines in Poznan. Just don't have enough funds to start.

Of course, it is not what would you probably look for but having a couple of F&Ch shops you could get into business management for them ;-)

I have received a very reasonable compensation, so I have some time and I will return to Scotland for christmas. So I don't expect to find anything until mid-late january, which is fine by me. I will look at the international companies, and if you hear anything don't hesitate to get in touch.

    Thanks once again Rory

I'm sorry to hear about that. If you're looking for job here in Poznan/Poland try to search for international companies as they are more likely to have english speaking staff.

If you looking for job in the UK then think about cooperation with Employment Agencies. They often look for people with expierence about Poles/ Polish workers. As a person who lived for a while you may be useful and helpful, be some kind of "middleman", if you know what I mean.

    Fingers crossed, mate :-)

Well I have just recently become unemployed as I was made redundant, I am looking for work in any sector regarding business management, administration, HR and similar.

    Thanks Rory

Good to hear (read) you enjoy Poznan :-)

Btw, I see in your profile that , apart from looking for friends you're also looking for business contact. What kind of business that would be? What's you job?

I have lived here for over a year, also been visiting Poznan for many more. I guess I would say that I am 100% accustom to polish life, and living in Poznan which is my favorite city in all of Poland, with it being far more cosmopolitan and open to the outside world.

    :) thanks Rory

Welcome to Poznan, Rory and Dennis :) Well... it's hard to say something about living here in just couple of words.

As our nation has lived under russian like-uccupation, behind so-called "iron curtain" we used to be closed country and unfortunely, sometimes we still are in some paarts of Poland. But since Poland joined EU it has been changin :-)

Personaly, i believe that Euro 2012 has made a significant change to our communism-affected mentality. We shoved a great sympathy and support for Irish football fans and they were fantastic to us too. Since then we expecting more and more peoplem from all over the world to come to Poland and some of them may even want to stay here for good :-)

As far as I know, there is no official English speaking group in Poznań, no forum or website, but maybe I didn't search enough to find one.

    About everday life in Poznan:

    1. Transport:
The public transport is one of the best and modern in the whole country. But is one of most expensive
though and often affected buy roadworks and traffic. Try use tramway rather than bus.
    2. Shopping:
We have a lot chain shops and supermarkets. From cheapest as "Biedronka" ( eng. "Ladybird" - look
for yellow-painted shops with "ladybird" logo) trough Tesco, Auchan, to "Piotr&Pawel" (eng."Peter&Paul")
which is like "Mark&spencer" in the UK)
Also, in Poznan there is couple of Mall Galleries such as "Kupiec" (pronouce: Coopietz) "Stary Browar"
(pronouce: Staree Brovar) where you will find famous cloths brands, for example Levi's, Wrangler, Adidas,
Nike etc, as well as electronic ones: samsung, nokia, sony etc. Both located in the city centre.
Please note that we also have small cornershops - but they are run by Poles, not by Pakistani, Hindi or
    Turkish guys ;)
    3. Food&Drinks: We have range of different restaurants: from ones serving typical Polish meals to chinese and
    other exotic ones.
Fastfood here is the same like anywhere in Europe: McShits, Burger Shit, KFS-hit, Shitway etc, but also lot of
pleaces serving kebabs, hod-dogs and "zapiekanka" ( It's a half of horizontally-cut baguette, covered with
fried white mushroms and melted grated chees (optionally with mixed salads ) served hot.
Rory, forget about Fish&Chips, you won't find any ;-)
    4.Night life:
For students, during academic year 24/7 ;-)
For others: starts on friday, culminating on saturday night, ends
    on sunday morning.
Lot of pubs and clubs, depends on what sort of entertainment you prefer. They all serve simmilar sort of
drinks from beer, vine to whisky and vodka. At the Dragon Pub they used to serve Strongbow cider, but i'm
not sure if they still do.
    5. it is sad but most of people don't speak English :( Even in public offices. Be ware of some taxi drivers. If they
realise you are from abroad they may cheat you on travel cost.
    6. Good news is we have one of the most beautiful girls in the world :)))

Any question, please ask me here. Sorry for any spelling and grammar mistakes I do ;)

    Have fun :)

    Michal.

As of January 2013 I will also be moving to Poznan.
How is the life there for expats and are there groups to join for a drink or sports?

    Regards,
    Dennis
