Marrying an Italian citizen

Posted in Italy forum

I am an American planning to come to Italy to marry an Italian citizen. Does anyone have any information on the paperwork required? I did not intend to get a visa because it is not required for short duration stays. Is it absolutely necessary that I have one? I want to become a resident if I can. Please help if you have any information...

Thank you,

~Lori

    Hi,

I am also married to an Italian and just like Pragz it took me round a year to make all done ( non EU ).

Finally, I've got the permit for 5 years. But it was a hell of a road :)

    Good Luck!

    Hi Lori,

I am also married to an Italian & unfortunately for me it took about a year since i'm not an EU Citizen & my lawyer messed up things as well! Finally, I approached the Italian Consulate in my home country, had my documents attested by them & flew into Italy, where I did the rest of the paperwork.
I have retained my Indian citizenship (since we also have Single Citizenship), but after coming here, with the help of my husband, I obtained a Permesso Di Soggiorno (permit for long stay), from the Police dept. and the Immigration authorities. Thereafter, I got an Identity Card from the Municipal House of the district & am now a Resident here, though the Permit is for 5 years, initially.
You have to get info from your country & the Italian Embassy before coming since they will have to go through your papers & most probably put their official seal on them (Marriage certificates, Birth certificate, education, etc). These will have to be shown here to the Authorities and the Permit is then given within 2 months or so. However, do check with the Italian Embassy there since laws are different for different countries.
You could tie the knot here in Italy & that will make things a lot easier...especially if you're a Catholic since then the paperwork will be much less!

    Good luck!

    Hi Lori.

I'm a Canadian in a similar situation, although we are going to co-habitate for a while before getting married. You can stay for up to 3 months without a visa, and because they often dont stamp your passport, it's a little flexible (especially if you fly into a different european country like france) If you want to stay longer you can get an employer sponcered work visa, your husband can sponcer you, or if you have significant savings you can get a long-term stay visa. Once you get there you need "permesso di soggiorno" which will take a little time and paperwork. Talk to the nearest Italian embassy for sure before you go to find out all the rules and timelines and what papers you will need.
One of the great things is that after only 6 months of marriage you can start the process of applying for citezenship. Now that I think about it though, the US might make you revoke your US citezenship if you do.. Lucky for me Canada has no problem with dual citezenship.

    Good luck with everything!
