Posted in Saudi Arabia forum

My fiancé get a job offer in Riyadh so we will move to Saudia Arabia next year. How is it to be a woman there? I am affraid that I won't have as much liberty than in Switzerland there. I feel lost when I think that I will move there, maybe because I do not know anything from the middle east and nobody from there... Help me please! I will be really happy to receive advices, testimonials, contacts, etc!

I switched my job to Jeddah from Karachi Pakistan two years ago. I feel like life is very PEACEFUL here and cost of living is also good as there is no tax at all. Average rent for 3 bedroom is between 15,000 to 80,000 depends on area, facilities, etc. Average school fee is between 200 to 1,500 depends on curriculum and goodwill of school and area also. Car fuel is even cheaper than mineral water, one liter patrol in .45 and .60 for each type. Cars are also cheaper than other countries due to tax advantage.
Women are dependent of man usually for going out as driving is not allowed for women here. The Jeddah is the best city here in terms of economy, sea-views, expatriats, etc. etc. I can suggest on the offer if I know how much salary is offered and benefits as well plus your family size. Best of luck and best wishes for moving to Jeddah, I am sure, it will be good decision to move.
    Best regards.

Well I think that yes, it may be hard, especially at the beggining. The first few days, you will have some problems to wear the abaya because it's not from your culture. If you can I will advice you to go to Jeddah some times, law are less hard in this city.

But anyway... If you goes with you boyfriend, already thinking how hard it will be, it will be hard indeed. You have to think positive! Think about what a rich culture you will discover! People you will meet! Arriving with that can of mind is much better than to be just complaining because you are affraid of what you don't know. If you don't want to discover arabian culture then don't go there, stay at home. But if you arrive with an open mind, then it can be only a benefic experience :) Hope my post was clear! I lived in arabian country several years so do not hesitate if you have questions ;)

As I the weather is quite hot right now I have one stupi question that comes in my mind... When the weather is hot in Saudia Arabia isn't it hard to wear the abaya? And is there some districts where it's possible to not wear it and to cover instead your head?
And if I get it right, once you respect the rules, the cities became a quite safe place for woman? Or did I misunderstood?
Also any feadbacks from womans? :)

Wearing abaya in public places is a must here, except private places like women section of restaurent, etc. Women can have all jobs but mainly you will see as following:
Nurse, Doctor, Teacher, Beauty Parlour, Air Hostess, You can teach English as private tuition at your home also to kill your time, plus earn money. Wives are fully dependent on man here for going out, buying groceries if store is far as women cannnot drive car here, not permitted.

The bottom line is no place in this universe is Heaven or Hell, so you will find advantages and disadvantages everywhere, just visit here, stay on visit vis and see then you can decide, I feel that you will like here.
    Best of luck.

    HI
    Dear
Warring abaya is the culture of the country depend on the religion and whine ever they asked non Saudi people to ware abaya they asked him to be as the local woman I mean Saudi woman so that the culture will not change and nobody no you are Saudi or non Saudi.
So if you came to KSA acclimatization yourself on that abay is one piece of your cloth. It is very soft and light. If you ware abaya you can go any ware. In Saudi Arabia, they respected woman who, wearing abaya everywhere. For example if you went to the bank, the system requires you to wait you number, but in Saudi Arabia you are submitted to all men. Also if you went to a fast food restaurant or to the money changer and this are happen all matters of life. Saudis viewed the woman as a mother; sister and wife so the men are try to keen hire at rest as much as possible. At the same time they do not like the relation outside the marital home.
