WELCOME TO
WATOTO WA AFRICAWelcome, karibu sana! Thank you for joining us.
This book is a guide for all the volunteers that work at Watoto Wa Africa. It will help you to get to know the orphanage better and it will give you an idea of how to help the kids, making a difference in their lives and having an experience you won’t forget.
You probably already know Josephat Kirutu, general director of the orphanage. Rosemary Kirutu is managing director. She is also Josephat’s wife and mother of all the children. Both of them will help you get around in the orphanage and find the best way to help them. Feel free to ask any questions you might have and share any ideas with them, they will always be happy to help you.
At the moment, we have 108 kids that you will get to know personally very soon. Have a look at this guide first and you will get a better idea of how to work with them.
Thanks a million for all your effort that is highly appreciated! We hope you enjoy your stay and have a great experience with us.SMALL THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
There is a volunteer office at the compound. The children are not allowed to enter this office alone. Josephat and Rosemary keep the keys and will give them to you any time you need them. In the office you can find books, school materials and games. The books, pencils, toys and games must be returned at all times before you leave the compound. This is only to prevent all the materials don’t get lost and to ensure that all the kids enjoy them.CLOTHES
On the compound it will be appreciated if you wear clothes appropriate to an African country. So wear a shirt that covers your shoulders and short/trousers that cover or is just above the knees. In the near future we want to buy kangas that can be used to protect your own clothes. They must always be left at the orphanage and will also be washed here.HOW TO GET AROUND WITH THE CHILDREN
Watoto Wa Africa kids are very respectful and affectionate. In your role as a volunteer they look up to you and will also learn from you. It is your obligation to share the commitment we have as a family to educate them, not only as students, but as people.
This means to applaud their efforts and good actions as well as to make them realize when are naughty. Teaching good manners like ‘please’, ‘thank you’ etc. is also important.
The small kids look very cute and it is tempting to pick them up, carry them around and hug them all the time. However, in Africa small children are not used to being carried around all day. It is something they will want more, the more they receive, but it can have poor effects on their relationships with each other. It also has a negative effect on their development, sometimes making them regress into poor toilet habits.
Please understand that it is as necessary to provide discipline for the kids as it is in giving them the affection they need. That is the great challenge of being a parent! We hope you will understand this and at the same time of course we hope that you will be able to get around with the children in your own way.FOOD
It is possible to have food at the orphanage. Cost per day is TZS 18,000. With this price we will give you the same lunch as we have ourselves, which will be ugali with either beans or vegetables, the same breakfast as ourselves and the same dinner as ours. With food you pay in advance, every week.WORKING STRUCTURE
This is a structure that will help you to distribute your time to teach the kids and help at the orphanage in many other chores, depending on how many people is volunteering at the same time.
Please notice that this is only a guide with the minimum tasks for all the volunteers to do. The more time you spend at the orphanage the more you will be able to help the kids, get closer to them and share a lot of good moments and experiences.
The volunteer’s coordinator might advise or propose any changes he/she considers necessary due to Watoto’s circumstances or needs.
Remember that you came here to help these kids and you should do your best when working at the orphanage!WATOTO WA AFRICA KIDS 2017

CLASSES:
We have tried to place the kids in groups according to their classes in school and on how we rate their understanding of the lessons we give them. But are only going to examples here because real grouping will be done or is usually done by the volunteers and the volunteer coordinator themselves.
For example, the kids in nursery school will have 3 groups namely:

WORKING MODEL FOR 2 VOLUNTEERS
Each volunteer will be responsible to teach 9 groups (some kids such as toddlers and nursery not included). Each kid/ group has to be taught at least 3 hours per week.
Other tasks:
Each volunteer has to spend at least 2 hours every day at the orphanage divided into:
- Teaching and playing with Nursery kids
- Helping with different chores: cleaning, washing, cooking, gardening, farming……Example of classes’ schedule:
Time / Date Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday

16:00 h B F B F
17:00 h C G C G
18:00 h D H D H• 2 groups from the same standard mixed.
This is an example taking into account that most of the kids go to school in the morning. As stated before, this is an example. Volunteers are free to make their own tailor made work model depending on schooling times but respect the minimum hours each kid has to be taught.
After all volunteers have to make their own schedule and post it up on the wall in the class! The kids will know who their teacher is and will be waiting for you at class time!!WORKING MODEL FOR 3 VOLUNTEERS:

Transforming Watoto Wa Africa into a self-supporting organization
Watoto Wa Africa is a voluntary, not for profit, organization. Our aim is to improve the welfare of vulnerable children and to provide for their basic needs (shelter, food, clothing, education, medical care, etc.) and we have 108 in our orphanage.
At this moment (February 20, 2017) Watoto Wa Africa is forced to transform from a donation dependence organization to self-supported one.
We are seeking for funds to buy a Mitsubishi Fuso Diesel lorry to be used in generating income for the orphanage. This lorry will be used to transport goods locally, but, before it can be used, the lorry has to be bought first and then prepared for transporting heavy goods.
After it is ready to go on the road, it will generate enough income to pay for food on monthly basis for all the kids at the orphanage, that will then make Watoto Wa Africa a self-supported organization.
At this moment funds are needed to invest in this project.
The investment requires a total amount of TZS 104,400,000/= equivalent to USD 52,200/=Investment and exploitation budget

Watoto Wa Africa Orphanage is housed in a compound. The different buildings are individual structures placed on sand.
During the rainy season in March/May the rain is so heavy that the foundations cannot resist all the water fleeting into the compound.
A drainage and absorbent system should be built to protect the foundations and the buildings.
At this moment funds are needed to invest in this project.
The investment requires a total amount of TZS 4,301,000/= equivalent to USD 2,151/=ABSORBENT DRAINAGE SYSTEM INVESTMENT BUDGET.

Total costs 5,460,000 2,730Tables and benches
We have a big building we used for meetings and dining or taking our meals and classes. But we badly need tables and benches.
The cost for this project are: TZS 2,260,000/= or USD 1,130/=CLOTHING WARDROBES IN ALL THE DORMITORIES
The Watoto Wa Africa compound contains 5 dormitories: two for girls and three for boys. All the rooms are in great need of a wardrobe to keep the clothes for the 108 children.
At the moment the clothes are piled and packed on the floor, which of course makes them dusty and dirty and that is also why they don’t last a very long life at the moment.
Total cost for all the closets: TZS 4,890,000/= or USD 2,445/=Small private lockers for all the children to keep their personal items;
On the compound there are two dormitories. Inside these rooms there are beds but there is no facility to keep personal items or school books and supplies.
In order to give the children a small place for personal belongings, which will also teach them that it is important to care for things that are valuable for them, it is necessary to build small lockers for all the (elder) children.
For that reason there is a need of 80 lockers that can be built by the staff that works at the orphanage.
The costs for this project are TZS 6,750,000/= or USD 3,375/=
Thank you and God bless and be with you as you decide on how you want to help us.
We are still putting up more information for you. - Watoto Wa Africa Orphanage
Watoto Wa Africa Orphanage needs people to come and volunteer who want to make a difference. We do not require any special skills or qualifications, except for a love of children and a desire to change people’s lives. We ask that volunteers come ready for a challenge and willing to put in some hard work.
