For the record, it will take you a lifetime to see all the important things in NYC! Ha,ha. The best thing to do (depending on the length of your stay) is to carve out 4 or 5 categories of things you enjoy and things that you just must see while in NYC. Then, under category list 7-8 things you'd like to do. After that, research times, locations and prices (if applicable). As a recommendation: see a Broadway show!
This is very general I know, but there is so much to do and see, you should organize locations or activities according to your interests.
