There are many permanent and volunteer positions for foreign health professionals in South Africa. Most of these are at government hospitals, focusing specifically on the rural areas of the country. ASK FOR ASSISTANCE TO WORK IN SOUTH AFRICA, PLEASE READ WHAT the Home Affairs Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula yesterday announced the availability of 34,825 quota work permits in 53 occupations where professionals are sorely needed. The quota work permits allow foreign professionals with the needed qualification and experience to come to South Africa and look for work, without securing employment in advance as is usually the case.
South Africa is hoping to attract up to 35,000 skilled foreign professionals in the coming year to make up for the shortage of skilled labour in the country.Most of the occupations are in the engineering and science fields, but call centre managers, veterinarians, maths and science teachers and jewellery designers are also needed. Employers are not required to show that there are no qualified South African available for the job before hiring a foreign national with a quota work permit.
"Every effort has been made to simplify the process so that we can get as many skilled people into the economy as quickly as possible," said Mapisa-Nqakula.
The permits are issued according to a yearly quota that identifies occupations where there is a lack of people with the essential skills.
"Through the Joint Initiative on Priority Skill Acquisition we have consulted widely with private and public sector industry and organised labour on the quota permits announced today," Mapisa-Nqakula said.
The measure was introduced last year but the minister admitted that there was not a great rush of takers.
"It was much, much less than we expected," she said.
Successful applicants under the quota system are required to find a job in their field of expertise within 90 days of being issued with permits to enter South Africa. The permits remain valid for as long as the permit holders are employed in their area of expertise, even if they change jobs.
The full list of occupations for which permits were granted was published in Wednesday's Government Gazette.
