Interesting that all replies are all from men:) I've been in SA for 5 months working as a doctor in one of the hospitals here. I can't post comments that might be considered biased on in here because it might be monitored and I might get in trouble. But to answer some of your questions:
    1. Yes wearing the abaya is required. Even for western women especially if they go out in public.
    2. You might also need to cover your hair, because there are these guys called Mutawas who have the right to punish you if you show your hair.
    3. It is safe living in a compound if you go out, it is a completely different set of rules.
    4. I hope you get used to bathing in desalinated water, because after five months I am still not used to it and had to buy bottled water to rinse the soap and shampoo off, but this is not common.
    5. Wish I could tell you more, you may reach me through my email inaatdoctordotcom. All lower caps.
I heard from many people Riyadh is a little sticter compard to Jeddah. Shopping is the only thing most women do here.
Let me know if you have more questions, I'd be happy to answer them and help you out if I can.
