As I mentioned in an earlier message, I have never tried to buy land there but, from what I heard at the time, only Thai nationals could buy land. The only way for a foreigner to do it was to use a trusted partner or family.When I was thinking on living there for some years, foreigners had to renew their visas every two months (Having to go out of Thailand to renew the visa. Some brave souls were trying a new visa-renewing route: Laos).
Living permanently there turns you from a friendly Farang visitor into a puzzling resident: You have to work there but as a foreigner you are supposed to be rich and some of your friends won't understand that you don't share your money with them ;-)
You are also open to police depredations: If somebody accuses you of being a bad neighbour you could be deported (Unless you use some fragrant grease ;-) )I hope somebody can give you more up to date information.
