    John, I am African American woman and an exchange student in Germany in the West. I have noticed the exact same thing as you! I walk with my head normal and make eye contact with those around me and sometimes I stop traffic. Literally, I was walking down the street toward Netto and a group of older men stopped walking and stared at me until I dropped my eyes. I felt less than human at that moment. It's like they want you to be as quiet as possible...and invisible too. I refuse to do that as an American and as a human being! However, I still feel the pressure when I walk out my door..it's like taking on the world...i can't wait to go home.
